Is it illegal for a us citizen to travel to mexico legally then try and sneak back into the us?

is there anything i could be charged with if i tried this? i have a lot of survival experience so the whole desert crossing wouldn't be a big problem for me. i just want to know if it is illegal. of course i would be carrying my passport and driver's license and traveling alone so it doesn't look like im a guide for illegals.
