What's people's obsession with Joss Whedon?

I don't understand why people talk about this guy so much. His Buffy might be legend status, but there are lots of other people who wrote brilliant things (I'm a fan of Douglas Adams and George Lucas), and their fans don't feel the need to write about how their produce is the best thing ever, to which very little else compares, I might add. Plus Joss Whedon is an unknown for many, his audience figures weren't all that high (and there's a reason for that, Doctor Who and Sliders are as good as the Whedon shows). When people who go online criticise Joss Whedon and his output, their voice is lost in an ocean of fawning uncitical praise.
